No private cars in Zion Canyon. Park at the Visitor Center — it's the only parking area. The free shuttle is the only access. Arriving around 10:30 AM Vegas time / 11:30 AM MT — expect shuttle queues by midday, so board the first one you can.

What to wear & pack: Water shoes or sturdy sandals (Tevas, Keens, or old sneakers you don't mind getting wet) — you'll wade into the Virgin River at the end of Riverside Walk. Skip flip-flops, the riverbed is rocky. Also bring: quick-dry shorts/pants, sunscreen, refillable water bottles, hats, and packed lunch. Swimwear isn't needed — water is too cold in April for actual swimming, just wading ankle- to knee-deep.

Riverside Walk → The Narrows

The park's most memorable family trail — completely flat, paved, 2.2 miles along the Virgin River at the base of towering 2,000 ft sandstone walls. At the very end the canyon narrows to just a few metres wide. Kids wade into the cool river between walls that block the sky. Wear water shoes or sandals you don't mind getting wet.

Parking — the most important decision: Visitor Center lot fills by mid-morning — don't even attempt it. Drive straight to Lion Boulevard parking (Zone C) on the south end of Springdale — ~$22/day, avoids the bumper-to-bumper line that builds on Zion Park Blvd. Park once, done. Catch the free Springdale Line shuttle (every ~15 min) to the park pedestrian entrance. Walk across the Virgin River footbridge to the entry gate.

2.2-mile paved trail along the Virgin River, leading into a deep narrow canyon with towering walls, waterfalls, and hanging gardens. As you walk deeper, the walls close in above you and it genuinely feels like being inside the Earth. Your 4-year-old will be amazed. Photo spots: (1) Halfway in — look straight up between the canyon walls; slot canyon framing the sky is extraordinary. (2) At the Narrows mouth — walls narrow dramatically, stunning family backdrop. Feet-dip spot: at the very end where the trail meets The Narrows, the river is calm and very shallow — let kids wade in ankle deep. Exactly the right amount of water for a 4-year-old.
